Magic System

The world of Dark Age of Camelot is alive with magic, which can be harnessed by different player classes in different ways. Each magic class in the game has a unique way of acquiring and using magic. Some classes are more adept at damaging other players, some heal and enhance their friends, and others lay traps and can make themselves invisible.

Because each Realm has a different history and traditions, magic for the different Realms will be generally different as well. Midgard, for example, is less dependent on magic than the other Realms, and the magic they do have is directed at making the fight better, because combat is their specialty.

Realm of Albion

The magic of Albion is educated and time-tested. It is the magic of the wizards and sorcerers and comes from years of dedicated study and practice of the elements of fire, water, air, and earth. Almost all spell-casting in Albion is based on elemental magic (Essence).

Magic is not looked down upon by the general populace of Albion, but it is not loved either. Most townspeople will evince a certain amount of fear and awe if spells are cast near them. Sorcerers, who deal in destructive magic, are not well-liked, especially in the churches of Albion.

The Clerics of Albion channel power from their deity. Their magic is just as awe-inspiring to commoners as mage spells are.

Realm of Midgard

Norse magic comes almost exclusively from channeling the power from one of their many gods. Because of this, their magic is not quite so powerful as the elemental magic of the Britons or the arcane magic of the Hibernians. Instead of mages and wizards, the Norse casters are Priests, who choose a god to follow at a young age. The choice of that god determines what kind of spells are available to that character. Different gods specialize in different types of magic – some are more defensive in nature, some heal better than others, etc.

The only exception to the above rule is the Shaman, a tribal magic user of the Trolls and Kobolds who specializes in primal magic.

Realm of Hibernia

The denizens of the Realm of Hibernia are magic – almost everything they do is imbued with a magical aura. As such, all their classes – with the sole exception of the warrior – use magic to some extent. Visually, the magic of the Hibernians is otherworldly and awe-inspiring, as if coming from a more primal source than the magic of the other Realms.

Hibernian magic is split into two parts. The "above ground" magic of nature-worship is led by the Druids, and is used by other classes such as the Hunter. The "Otherworld" magic of the Undermountain folk is used by the Eldrich and Nightblade, and Enchanter..
