Mahrin On Sever Stability
June 18, 2001
Over on the developers
boards MahrinSkel replied to a thread which commented on how stable the
server and client have been in Camelot.
Both the client and server are proven, production code at
their core.
Our programmers *are* good, but it helps that the basic server engine is based
on a codebase that has been in production for 15 years, and has been rebuilt
often enough to get past it's scaling issues. We've had up to 300 people
online at once, and the few crashes we've had have rarely been caused by
scaling (usually crashes because a GM does something wierd, like trying to
edit an object he just deleted).
The NetImmerse engine from NDL we use for the client has been amazingly solid,
as well, but it has also been used for other games, including a few from
Mythic.
You can never be sure what scaling issues will come up further down the line,
but since our long-term target for a single world server is only 3 times what
we've already hit (each world will probably be 4 physical servers), we're not
too worried about it.

Mahrin Skel Replies on Hybrid Classes
June 18, 2001
Over on the developers
boards MahrinSkel posted concerning the power and uniqueness of the ranger
class in Hibernia.
Our general approach with "Hybrid" classes is to
not make them hybrids. At least, not in the traditional definition.
Typically, they have equal or *slightly* reduced straight-up melee capability
compared to the "pure" melee classes, but in place of some advanced
melee combat techniques they get magical abilities.
Original Poster : "Half a fighter and half a caster makes a
half-assed class."
Mahrin's Reply : Our "Hybrids" aren't half of anything, the
"Fighter/Caster" shorthand just indicates what the advanced
capabilities of the class will be most similar to. For example, although the
Paladin is a "Fighter/Cleric", the Paladin spells are *completely*
different from the Cleric spells.

Hibernian Classes Announced
June 14, 2001 1:45pm
I just got this from DAOC Official Site:
We're hard at work implementing
the third and final Realm of Dark Age of Camelot: Hibernia, which is based on
Irish Celtic mythology and legends. As such, we have a more complete list of
classes for that Realm -- you'll find all your favorites such as the Eldritch
and Druid, as well as new classes like the Empath and Stalker. You'll find the
complete list of the Hibernian
Class page.
Beta testing of the Realm of
Hibernian is scheduled to start in mid-July.

Mahrin
Skel Loves you! Replies on Dyeing and Character height!
Saturday, June 9, 2001
- 4:58 PM CST
Mahrin replies to 2 separate
posts over on the Camelot
Vault message boards. In the reply to player height he posted:
You
can vary 10% either way. That doesn't sound like a lot of difference at first,
but it's the difference between someone 5 feet 5 inches, 6 feet, and 6 foot 7
inches.
On the topic of armor, and clothes dyeing he had this to say:
Enamel
is the equivalent of dying for metallic armors. It was comparatively uncommon
to dye or enamel armor, but it was, strictly speaking, historically possible.
Anyway, it's not a realism thing. Players like being able to color their
clothing, so we let them. Some colors (notably Black and Gold) will be
restricted to special equipment rather than be dyable, to maintain the
"Cool Factor" for them, and some dyes will be harder to find and
more expensive than others.
Short but informative! Once again I would like to thank Camelot Vault for
providing a forum that Mythic comments on!

Mahrin
Strikes again, explains basics of new Con System!
Thursday, June 7, 2001
- 2:07 PM CST
Over on the CamelotVault
developer's board Mahrin Skel has layed out the con system basics.
I'll
go ahead and let the cat out of the bag here.
Red: Significantly higher in level than you are, may be beatable by a group of
5-8 your level.
Orange: Somewhat higher in level (what EQ players would call a "Low
Red"). Can be beaten with a group of 3-5.
Yellow: Equal or little higher in level than you are, 2 can take it handily.
Blue: Below you in level, but strong enough to be a challenge. You'll probably
win fighting it alone.
Green: Well below your level, you could beat it with one hand tied behind your
back, but it's tough enough you can still learn something from the fight
(you'll get XP).
Gray: Sneeze in its direction and it will fall over. You'll get no experience
from fighting it (but it usually won't try to attack you).
The colors are applied to the name you see above the target's health bar,
which by default is on the bottom right. It's a pretty intuitive system that
is much easier to react to than a text description you'd have to parse out.
That's all the info he posted on the Con System, but if you want to check out
the thread, go here.
